Zergling Magnetization Kit Guide

The OG bug swarm. These lil monsters will sweep through enemy forces like a swarm of locusts from hell. Our easy-to-use magnetization kit makes sure you can swap between all three forms these demon crickets come in.

The length of these instructions may seem intimidating, but they were designed to make sure you see everything from every angle and do not make a mistake. Please follow the normal assembly instructions that come with the plastic kit; the steps below cover only the magnetization.

To keep track of magnet polarity we use a set of Magnicator tools. We refer to a magnet's polarity as red or blue, after the Magnicator end that is attracted to that magnet's surface. If you do not have those tools, use another method to track polarity: for example, mark one face of a large spare magnet and reference it every time.

Steps at a Glance

Step Description
1 Building your bugs (assemble the right side and set the hip magnet)
2 Drilling the body (open both hip sockets and set the swap magnet)
3 It gives you WIIIINGS! (magnetize the Raptor wings)

For this guide you will need

  • Zergling Magnetization Kit
  • Hobby Knife
  • Hobby Snips
  • Super Glue
  • Magnicator Tool
  • Large Pin Vise (0.5mm-8mm)
  • 2mm Drill Bit
  • 3mm Drill Bit
  • 4mm Drill Bit
  • Flat or broad needle file

Optional:
Insta-Set accelerant

The plastic kit builds a set of Zerglings, each one catalogued with its own letter. With this kit installed, any of them can be fielded as a Zergling or a Swarmling, and Zerglings A, B, D and E can also take the Raptor wings. The Swarmling body half has no wing mounting point, so it never gets drilled.

Magnets used in this guide

Magnet size # used Where used
4mm x 1mm disc 1 Interior of the right side hip socket
3mm x 6mm cylinder 1 Hip connection point on part A4
2mm x 2mm 2 Wing connection points, one per body half
3mm x 0.5mm disc 2 Raptor wing tips, one per wing

Counts are per Zergling and reflect the magnets installed in this guide. Repeat the process for every Zergling you field. Your kit may include spares.

Step 1: Building your bugs

4mm x 1mm disc 1 Interior of the right side hip socket

Each Zergling miniature is alphanumerically catalogued: A1, B1, C1 and so on. That keeps things simple, because you repeat the same process for each Zergling you choose to field. This guide uses miniature set A.

1A: First, remove and glue together the RIGHT SIDE of your Zergling as shown below, parts A2 and A4.

Once you have done this, use the RED end of your Magnicator Tool and a needle file to score the face of a 4 x 1mm disc magnet. Then glue the magnet into place on the interior of the hip socket as shown below.

1B: Next, clip and remove the corresponding parts for the Zergling: the jaw (A3), the left half of the Zergling (A1), the Swarmling half (A7), the left talon (A5), and the pair of wings for the Zergling Raptor (A9 left and A8 right). Once these are clipped and ready, glue the lower jaw to the RIGHT SIDE ONLY.

Step 2: Drilling the body

Magnets Used # Where

Line up both of the left side body parts, A1 and A7, one at a time. Using your Large Pin Vise and 4mm bit, drill through the hip socket, using the 4mm magnet you glued earlier as a stopping point.

Clean and remove any plastic shavings that might be sitting inside the mini. Do this for BOTH A1 and A7. Do NOT glue the bodies together fully.

2A: After the hip sockets have been drilled, use your 3mm bit to drill into the hip connection point on part A4. Each hip socket is moulded with a slight variation that does not affect the magnetization process, so go slowly and do not drill all the way through.

2B: Once you have drilled out the hip connection on part A4, use the BLUE end of your Magnicator Tool to orient polarity, then glue a 3 x 6mm cylinder magnet in place into the drilled hip connection.

Once the glue is cured, you can swap between the two body variants without gluing the actual body pieces together.

Step 3: It gives you WIIIINGS!

3mm x 0.5mm disc 2 Raptor wing tips, one per wing

The final step in this guide adds the magnets for the Zergling Raptor variants. Zerglings A, B, D and E all have a lightly moulded space where the wings would sit, and you need to drill into that spot. Locate it by dry fitting each wing to its respective model's sides.

The Swarmling body part does NOT need to be drilled, as it cannot take wings.

3A: Using your 2mm bit, gently drill into the designated connection point on both halves of the Zergling bodies. You will drill into the cavity fully.

Then, using the BLUE end of your Magnicator Tool, glue and insert a 2 x 2mm magnet into both of the drilled connection points. Make sure the magnets sit flush to the surface.

Once these spots are magnetized on your Zerglings, use the RED end of your Magnicator Tool and a needle file to lightly score the face of a 3 x 0.5mm disc magnet, one for each wing. Then glue each magnet to the tip of the wing so that it aligns with the magnets already placed within the Zergling bodies.

Conclusion

Your small (but quickly growing) swarm of Zerglings is ready for the tabletop and to overrun your opponent. Make Kerrigan proud.
