Toxicrene / Maleceptor Magnetization Guide

Full guide

Toxicrene & Maleceptor Magnetization Kit

Price $14.99 USD

This article explains how to magnetize the Toxicrene / Maleceptor model using our magnetization kit. You will be able to use the end model as any of the Toxicrene and Maleceptor builds available in that box.

Please follow the normal assembly instructions that come with the plastic kit; the steps below cover only the magnetization.

To keep track of magnet polarity we use a set of Magnicator tools. We refer to a magnet's polarity as "red" or "blue," after the Magnicator end that is attracted to that magnet's surface. If you do not have those tools, use another method to track polarity, for example mark one face of a large spare magnet and reference it every time you place a magnet.

If there was anything scarier than 1 big brain...it's 6 of them. Galloping across the battlefield like a Lovecraftian nightmare, the Toxicrene and Maleceptor are the perfect Tyranid answer to a question that nobody asked.

Please note that you will need to decide if you want to have your model in either an Attack Position or a Crouch Position based on the instruction manual.

The kit comes with a set of 26 magnets.

Tools For this guide you will need

  • Toxicrene / Maleceptor magnetization kit: every magnet and part this guide uses.
  • Thick or gel super glue, such as Maxi-Cure Plus: glues each magnet in place without running the way thin CA glue does.
  • Magnicators V2: show which face of a magnet is red or blue, so every pair attracts.
  • Needle files or sandpaper: clean up a hole or socket so the magnet sits flush.
  • Hobby knife or clippers: remove parts from the sprue and trim the areas the steps call out.
  • Drill bits, 2.5mm, 3mm, 5mm, and 6mm: the bit sizes the steps drill with.
  • Small Hand Drill: holds bits from 1mm to 3mm and turns them by hand.
  • Large Pin Vise: holds bits from 0.5mm to 8mm and turns them by hand.
  • Drill Bit Small Metric Bundle: supplies the 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, and 3mm bits.
  • Drill Bit Medium Metric Bundle: supplies the 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm bits.
  • Painter's or masking tape (optional): marks drill depth on the bit when you drill the brains.
  • Insta-Set accelerant (optional): sets the super glue faster.

Step 1A Brains

For this step of the build, you will need to follow the instruction manual's steps 1A to 1D, stopping there. Do NOT build step 1F until after magnets have been placed.

Model Parts

Part Part #
Main body 01, 02

Within the interior of Parts 01 and 02, you will need to use your pin vise and 5mm bit to lightly drill into the center of each brain as shown below. Do not drill completely through, you will be going about 1mm deep (Use painter's tape as a depth guide).

Step 1C Brain Coverings

Magnets Used

Size # Where
2.5mm x 0.5mm 6 Inside each brain covering, parts 46 to 51

Model Parts

Part Part #
Brain coverings 46 to 51

Once you have the internal brain magnets in place, you will need to drill the interior of each brain covering (Parts 46 to 51). For each covering use your 2.5mm drill bit to lightly drill into the interior of each covering, just like you did with the brains. ONLY DRILL 0.5mm DEEP. Dry fit a 2.5mm x 0.5mm disc magnet to ensure proper depth. You will want the interior surface of the coverings to be flush.

Step 1D Neck

Magnets Used

Size # Where
12mm x 2mm 1 Base of the neck

Next you will need to use the BLUE end of your Magnicator Tool and position the 12mm x 2mm disc magnet into position at the base of what I can only describe as this thing's...neck(?).

Be sure to position the magnet so that it sits as flush as possible and is no higher than the top of the neckline connecting points.

Step 2A Toxicrene Head

For this portion of the build, you will be constructing the 2 heads of this monstrous beast.

Model Parts

Part Part #
Toxicrene head 36, 37

Step 2B Maleceptor Head

Magnets Used

Size # Where
10 x 5mm hemisphere 2 Inside the Toxicrene head and the Maleceptor head

Model Parts

Part Part #
Maleceptor head 31, 32, 33

Once you glue these parts together, you will need to use the BLUE end of your Magnicator Tool to guide and insert one of the 10 x 5mm hemisphere magnets into the interior of the Toxicrene head, with the rounded portion sitting against the interior of the face. Glue this magnet in place within the head.

Repeat this with the second 10 x 5mm hemisphere magnet in the Maleceptor head, again using the BLUE end of your Magnicator Tool.

Step 3 Chest

Magnets Used

Size # Where
3mm x 3mm 2 Front of the main body

For the Chest you will first need to drill into the front of the main body using your 3mm bit at the 2 locations pictured below.

Two 3mm holes drilled in the front of the main body for the chest armor

Next you will need to use the RED end of your Magnicator Tool to insert and glue a 3mm x 3mm magnet into both drilled holes.

Step 3B Maleceptor Chest Armor

Magnets Used

Size # Where
3mm x 3mm 2 Connecting side of the Maleceptor chest armor

Model Parts

Part Part #
Maleceptor chest armor 34, 35

Once these 2 parts are glued together, you will need to drill into the connecting side of the Maleceptor armor, using your 3mm bit. You will drill 2 locations pictured below. Do NOT drill all the way through the armor, only into the cavity.

Two 3mm holes drilled into the connecting side of the Maleceptor chest armor

You will then use the BLUE end of your Magnicator Tool to insert and glue a 3mm x 3mm magnet into each hole, making sure the Magnicator Tool sits flush.

Step 4A Shoulder Sockets

This next portion of the guide will have you drilling and magnetizing the forwardmost shoulder sockets from within the body of the beast.

You will need to drill into the first set of shoulder sockets using your 6mm bit. Once you have done this, you will need to trim away a bit of the plastic left behind from the drill process.

Step 4B Shoulder Magnets

Magnets Used

Size # Where
10mm x 3mm 2 Forwardmost shoulder sockets, from the interior

Once both shoulders have been drilled, you will need to use the RED end of your Magnicator Tool to glue a 10mm x 3mm disc magnet into the shoulder socket from the interior as pictured below. You will repeat this for both forwardmost shoulder sockets.

Step 5A Maleceptor Scything Talons

In this step of the guide, you will be clipping, drilling and magnetizing both sets of arms (Scything talons - Maleceptor / Lashing tentacles - Toxicrene).

Magnets Used

Size # Where
6mm sphere 2 Shoulders of the left and right scything talon arms

You will need to clip the plastic of the shoulder connection points on both left and right arms as pictured below.

Scything talon arm with the shoulder connection point marked for clipping Scything talon shoulder after the connection point is clipped off

Once you have removed this bit, you will need to use your 6mm bit and lightly drill into the shoulder itself, creating a concave space.

6mm bit drilling a concave seat into the scything talon shoulder Finished concave seat in the clipped scything talon shoulder

After this section has been drilled, you will need to align the polarity of a 6mm sphere magnet to the respective shoulder socket. Gently ease the sphere close to its respective socket and allow it to align.

Step 5B Toxicrene Lashing Tentacles

Magnets Used

Size # Where
6mm x 4mm 2 Shoulders of the lashing tentacle arms

The arms of this set are designed slightly differently from the scything talons as they are meant to support the weight of having the tentacles reaching so far out from the model itself.

You will need to test fit a few times to make sure you are happy with posing and magnetic hold.

Just like the Scything Talons, you will need to clip off a bit of the shoulder connecting section and then proceed to use your 6mm bit to drill into the clipped shoulder. Only drill about 2mm deep.

Lashing tentacle arm with the shoulder connecting section clipped 6mm bit drilling about 2mm into the lashing tentacle shoulder Drilled 2mm seat in the lashing tentacle shoulder

Just like the spheres you will carefully place the 6mm x 4mm magnet(s) into the socket, letting the internal shoulder one hold it in place, then glue the tentacle arms to the inserted magnet once you are happy with depth and posing.

6mm x 4mm magnet held in the shoulder socket by the internal shoulder magnet Lashing tentacle arm test fitted onto the 6mm x 4mm magnet Both lashing tentacle arms glued to their magnets and attached to the body

Once these magnets are in place, you can complete the rest of the model.
