You Ordered "N52 Neodymium Magnets." But Are They Really N52?

What Magnet Grades Actually Mean
Every neodymium magnet has a grade — N35, N42, N48, N52 — that tells you its maximum energy product, measured in Mega-Gauss Oersteds (MGOe). In plain terms: the higher the number, the stronger the magnet for its size.
Here's why that matters. An N52 magnet is roughly 49% stronger than an N35 magnet of the same dimensions. That's not a subtle difference — it's the difference between a magnet that snaps firmly into place and one that lets your miniature's arm droop mid-game.

We've seen this firsthand. We ordered 6mm x 3mm disc magnets listed as N52 from marketplace sellers. A genuine N52 in that size should pull approximately 2.35 lbs. What arrived felt like less than half that strength — closer to a low-grade N35 or worse. On paper, the difference between N52 and N35 at that size is roughly a third less pull force. In practice, these felt even weaker than the numbers suggest.
This isn't a one-off experience. It's a known pattern across online marketplaces where there's no independent verification of magnet grades. Common issues include:
- Grade mislabeling — magnets sold as N52 that test at N35 or N42 pull force levels

Notice the 12mm x 3mm in that table. It's physically much larger than the 6mm x 3mm, but it's N35 grade — and its pull force reflects that. A magnet three times the surface area only pulls about 2.8x more because the grade is lower. How to Test Magnet Strength Yourself
The Kitchen Scale Method
This is the most reliable at-home test. You'll need a digital kitchen scale and a flat steel plate (a cheap one from a hardware store works fine).
- Place the steel plate on the scale and zero it out
- Stick your magnet to the underside of the steel plate
- Slowly pull the magnet straight down until it releases
- The peak reading on the scale is your pull force
Compare your reading against the manufacturer's stated pull force for that size and grade. If your "N52" magnets are pulling significantly less than spec — say, half the expected force — you likely received a lower grade than advertised.

- Consistent coating — triple-layer nickel-copper-nickel (NiCuNi) is the standard for durability. Single-layer coatings chip easily.
- Grade honesty — a reputable seller will list N35 where it's N35, not label everything N52 because it sounds better. We sell both grades and we're clear about which is which.
- Dimensional tolerances — magnets should be within ±0.1mm of their listed size. Loose tolerances mean loose quality control everywhere else.
